In mid-September, a regional two-day workshop on Faith Based Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) was held in Tanzania. KOEE worked in tandem with the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in Tanzania and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) to organize this workshop. Focused on how to effectively mainstream religious wisdom into teaching environmental education in Tanzanian schools, the workshop aimed at building upon groundwork already established in Tanzania by the JGI through its Roots and Shoots program for young Muslims along with work in Kenya by KOEE and ARC to develop a Faith-Based Education for Sustainable Development initiative.
The workshop sought to identify existing gaps, challenges and opportunities. The main outcome of the meeting was a commitment to explore the formation of a network for faith leaders on the environment in Tanzania and to explore the introduction and spread of education on the environment in faith schools as well as the launch in Tanzania of the Faith-based ESD Teacher’s Toolkit. Additionally, guest of honor, Dr. Terezya Huvisa, the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office responsible for the Environment who is also the President of the African Ministerial Conference of the Environment (AMCEN), that a faith-based ESD program should be introduced in all African countries. Commitments were also made by the National Muslim Council of Tanzania to implement environmental education and by Ugandan faith leaders to host a similar meeting in Uganda this year
“It is a call of the Tanzania Government to all faith institutions to stand along in unity and set a long term plan on conservation matters” –Dr. Terezya Huvisa
