Environmental Education Intern- Duration: 3 Months. Starting September 2017

BACKGROUND

The Kenya Organization of Environmental Education (KOEE) was established as a venture towards the Agenda 21- a global partnership to protect the dignity of the environment. Its vision is to create an enlightened society that sustainably manages its resources and have improved livelihoods with a mission to promote and re-orient environmental education towards sustainable development through appropriate and realistic national and regional programmes for people to actively participate in solving and preventing environmental problems.  KOEE implements three core program areas namely Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Environmental Governance (EG). In addition, KOEE is developing a Services and Enterprises arm which encompasses Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility Work Place Training, and Environmental Sustainability Consultancies. KOEE works with Government Institutions, Cooperate Institutions, Civil Society, Learning Institutions and Development Partners. KOEE is the implementing agency of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) Programmes in Kenya: the Eco-schools and Learning about Forests (LEAF) programmes. KOEE is currently looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of an Environmental Education Intern for an initial period of three (3) months, renewable based on need and performance.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Assist in drafting and editing Eco-schools and ESD materials (Toolkits, Training Guides/Manuals and ESD thematic handbooks)

  • Assist in drafting, editing and maintaining communication tools (website, social media networks, newsletters, information bulletins e.t.c.)

  • Help in researching and documentation of various development issues as directed by project staff

  • Assist project staff in data organization, compilation and analysis for the various programmes in the organization.

  • Work with the Eco-Schools project officer to deliver project activities in schools and communities including monitoring, evaluation and report writing.

  • Assist in planning, organizing and mobilization of participants for trainings, sensitization workshops and other organizational meetings.

  • Attending and taking minutes during relevant meetings

  • Provide support in general office administration and management.

  • Perform any other duties as directed by the supervisor.

    Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelors Degree in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or related field (must have graduated)

  • At least 1 year previous experience or knowledge in Education for Sustainable Development, Environmental Writing and Reporting and Climate Change programming will be an added advantage

  • Problem-solving skills, strategic thinking skills required

  • Ability to work under and follow instructions with minimal supervision

  • Good communications and interpersonal skills

  • Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet) and good report writing skills

  • Flexibility in taking on different assignments from different project areas

  • Good fund-raising and negotiation skills

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and Kiswahili

  • Willing to learn under a busy working environment

  • A team player.

  • Remuneration

     

    The position is to be offered purely on a voluntary basis though considerations might be given to provide transport facilitation as mutually agreed.
