What is the Eco-Schools Wrigley Company Foundation ‘Litter Less’ Campaign?

The aim of the ‘Litter Less’ Campaign is to reduce litter and effect long-term behaviour change amongst the youth around the globe. During 2013/2014 the campaign will be delivered through Eco-Schools in 15 different countries including Kenya

The main objectives of the Wrigley ‘Litter Less’ Campaign are:

 To raise awareness of the effect of litter on the local environment and wider community

 To increase student knowledge and practical skills in preventing and managing litter

 To collaborate with other schools to promote ESD (education for sustainable development)

 To report the progress of the campaign within the seven steps change framework

 To produce a culminating outcome and report it through multimedia channels

Interested schools are encouraged to apply to the campaign ASAP as funding is limited and is offered on a first come first serve basis. The Application Form is downloadable at the end of the page.

Funding For Schools

Schools selected to participate in the campaign will be eligible for funding up to USD500. Once selected, there are certain criteria that schools must follow in order to successfully participate in the programme and receive the available funding:

 The first thing you must do is register your school through ´Eco-Schools Connect’.

 Once registered you will be sent your seed funding

 Each school must upload evidence of the ‘Litter Less’ campaign through the seven step change wheel on the website.

 Go to http://www.eco-schools-wrigley.org/school-96.html#step1 to see a sample report from last year.

 Each school is required to connect/collaborate with other schools in participating countries.

 The deadline for completion of the project is May 2014.

Seed-funding activity ideas from 2011-2013 Campaign

There are various ways in which the seed-funding could be spent within an Eco-School. Examples from Northern Ireland Eco-Schools which participated in the Litter Less Campaign last year include:

 School campaign focused on creating a litter-free school. The seed funding was used to buy more bins and litter pickers.

 School survey to identify reasons for the litter issues in the school. Funding was then used to buy new bins, compost bin and seeds for the garden.

 School campaign focused on identifying problem areas for litter, raising awareness of litter and encouraging more recycling. The seed funding was used towards adding to the minibeast hotel, seeds, plants and a compost bin.

 School campaign focused on raising awareness of the importance of reducing litter and waste. Funding was used to purchase litter pickers and gloves, planters and plants and to purchase signs to encourage care of the environment.

 School campaign to provide a 'litter-less' environment for pupils. The project also encouraged healthy eating and recycling. The seed funding was used to buy items for the garden, including shrubs, bird food and information signs.

 School had a design a litter bin competition which would be produced by the local college. Seed funding used was used to buy the raw materials to make the bins, recycling containers, litter pickers, gloves and appropriate clothing for the pupils involved.

 Completed a litter pick in the local area with the Litter Prevention Officer. The seed funding was used to buy plants, seeds and gardening equipment.

 Raised awareness of placing litter into a bin through a Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 assembly. The seed funding was used to buy litter pickers, new coloured bins for the playground, paper, for the upkeep of bin bags and disposable gloves, and for reduce, reuse and recycle posters.

 Implemented a school litter policy, Held a special assembly on litter management for the whole school and children in the school designed a litter bin. The school used the seed funding to buy new litter bins and some litter pickers to use on a local trip to the local village.
